The mercury will drop to 6 degree Celsius on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said today.

A statement by the observatory warned that a cold wave is expected to reach southern China in the middle of this week. The bureau forecast that the temperature in Macau will "drop remarkably" below 10 degrees Celsius. It predicted that it will be "very cold" on Thursday (New Year's Eve) and Friday (New Year's Day) when the mercury is forecast to fall to around 6 degree Celsius.

The statement urged the public to "take precautions against the cold weather."

At 3:30 p.m. today the temperature stood at 22.0 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity amounted to 64  percent while the UV index stood at 2 (low).

The observatory forecast the temperature to range between 8 and 16 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

Customarily, the government opens the city's cold weather shelter when the temperature dips to 12 degrees Celsius.

According to the myweather2.com website, Macau's lowest recorded temperature "in recent times" in December was 3 degree Celsius.
