Macau General Association of Chinese Students and Macau Youth Research Association’s recent survey shows that only 20 percent of local secondary school pupils get eight or more hours sleep a night, according to the associations’ statement yesterday.
The survey result was announced during a press conference at the Macau General Association of Chinese Students near the Red Market.
The statement noted that the survey was conducted in November and December, adding that the associations surveyed 12 secondary schools including 1,055 local pupils about their daily habits.
The statement pointed out that only 10 percent of the respondents go to bed before 10 p.m., pointing out that only 27 percent of the respondents said that they have a good night’s sleep. The statement pointed out that over 35 percent of respondents said that they go to bed late more than five times a week because they are busy using their smartphones, tablets and computers.
The statement also said that almost 30 percent of the respondents said that they do not exercise outside of school, adding that around 30 to 35 percent of the respondents said that their schools do not provide enough physical education.
The statement also said that over 40 percent of respondents said that they drink sugary beverages more than four times a week. The statement pointed out that the pupils are well aware of what accounts for a healthy lifestyle but disregard the importance of it.
The associations suggest pupils start building a better sleeping habit, diet and exercise schedule. The association also urged education entities and schools to provide more physical education lesson hours to help them have a healthier lifestyle.
