An exhibition of local brand Nega C. by local artist Isabella Choi Nga Teng is on display at the Macau Fashion Gallery (MFG) as part of the “2021 Brand Story – Macau Original Fashion Exhibition I” co-organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM).
According to a CPTTM statement, the exhibition provides participants with the opportunity to showcase their brands in their own creative styles and their brands’ concepts as well as to “spread the charm of the very original local brands to the public.”
The “Brand Story” series was first launched in 2017 and eight local brands have been selected for this year’s exhibition, namely Nega C., Lexx Moda, ANIFA, Common Comma, PUI, Demi*D, NO.42 and C/W COLLECTIVE. The designs are to be showcased in eight phases, with one brand being featured in each phase, according to the statement.
The first phase of the exhibition features women’s fashion label Nega C. founded by Choi in 2011 who focused on designing stage costumes and shoes at first. Choi opened a boutique for women’s wear in 2012 and later expanded to cover ready-to-wear women’s clothes. Choi’s design principle for Nega C. is ‘The life you love, the love you live’, according to an unsigned article on the gallery’s website.
Choi developed a strong interest in fashion design when she was very young. She studied Fashion Design at Kingston University in London. She hopes to incorporate creativity into daily life, and understanding it with the right attitude, the article points out.
According to the article, this series is specially designed to welcome the Chinese New Year with the theme of “Spring”. 2020 has been a very challenging year. It is hoped that 2021 can mark a new start, the article says.
This exhibition incorporates Chinese style elements, combining traditional cheongsam design with modern styles, and other items such as scarves and handmade hats. By blending the concepts of tradition and modernity, it portrays the image of gentle and graceful modern Chinese women, while adding a sense of occasion to the traditional Spring Festival, the article points out.
The exhibition runs until March 14 at the Macau Fashion Gallery at 47 Rua de S. Roque, S. Lázaro district. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day (except Mondays). Admission is free.
As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the venue have to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health declaration.
