Macau's Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) says it aims to plant 5,000 trees in the green belts and pavements of the city's main roads "in all districts" between last and this year.
The bureau announced the tree-planting drive in a statement yesterday. "The tree-planting work continues this year, with the goal of planting 3,200 trees," the statement said, pointing out that 2,118 trees had already been planted in the first quarter. According to the statement, all the 5,000 trees are expected to have been planted by the third quarter.
The statement noted that 1,849 trees were planted in city's green belts and main-road pavements last year.
"Trees not only photosynthesise, absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, and mitigate global warming, but also settle suspended particulate matter, purify the air, and withstand wind," the statement underlined, adding: "Therefore, planting trees extensively has a positive impact on the ecological environment and even human life."
The statement also noted that in the selection of tree species, "priority is given to trees species grown in southern China where the climate is similar to that of Macau."
According to the statement, the trees "are planted in seedling form to better balance root and canopy growth, and strengthen the trees' capacity to abate wind."
