A painting exhibition entitled “Profound” (玄) by Hong Kong artist David Sheekwan (唐書琨) co-organised by Albergue SCM and Arts Empowering Lab (AEL), is being held at Albergue SCM’s gallery.

The artist’s Chinese name is Tong Sheekwan.

According to an article provided by Albergue SCM, the exhibition features 14 oil paintings. Tong was trained in Ceramics and Painting on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) in 1955, he then went to Paris where he opened his own design studio.

Tong returned to his native Hong Kong in 1972 to start his own fashion business David & David.

In the 80s, Tong embarked on a new venture to be an artist and studied Photography at the Parsons School of Design in New York, and Painting and Ceramics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He published his first photography collection, “Photographs by David Sheekwan” in 1999. In 2013, he held a painting and photography exhibition at the Cuiheng Art Museum in Zhongshan, Guangdong province, exhibiting oil paintings and photographs.

The article underlines that Tong has been curious about the cosmos since he was a child, and this is a recurrent theme in his artistic creations. His abstract ink and wash paintings show his unique observation of colours, lines and proportions, the article points out. His painting style is simple but mysterious – his paintings always leave space to make people think.

The exhibits are on sale priced at 38,000 patacas and 48,000 patacas.

The exhibition runs until July 4 in Gallery A2 of Albergue SCM at 8 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro. It opens daily from 12 noon to 8 p.m. except Mondays when it opens from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Part of the exhibition is currently held at the Arts Empowering Lab at 1 Pátio do Padre Narciso until June 19. Admission is free at both venues.
