A man from the mainland was arrested on Monday for raping a 39-year-old local woman in his hotel guestroom in Zape on the previous night, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old suspect surnamed Tan told the police that he is a businessman.
According to Lou, the Public Security Police (PSP) referred the case to the Judiciary Police on Sunday night. The victim told the police that she met Tan through a mainland friend and they had dinner with some other friends that night. After the meal, they went to Tan’s room for drinks and to chat. Her friends then left the room one after another, leaving her and Tan in the room.
Lou said Tan suddenly forcibly took off the victim’s clothes and raped her. Tan then fell asleep. The victim hastily put on some of her clothes, left the room and asked a security guard to call the police.
According to Lou, PJ officers arrived at the room and questioned Tan who told the police that they had had consensual sex. However, according to the statement by the hotel security guard, the victim looked frightened and wasn’t properly dressed when he talked to her. PJ officers also discovered that the victim had sustained bruises on her head and limbs, as well as there being signs of a fight in the room.
Lou said PJ officers arrested Tan on Monday afternoon and transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) later that day. Tan faces a rape charge, according to Lou. Tan faces between three and 12 years behind bars.
