The government plans to invite bids for a new pumping station in the northern area of the Inner Harbour, which aims to help prevent flooding, in the next quarter, Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) Acting Director Wong Chiu Man said yesterday.

Wong made the remarks when replying to an oral interpellation about the city’s flooding problems by legislator-cum-civil engineer Leong Hong Sai, during a plenary session in the Legislative Assembly (AL) yesterday, which was also attended by Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosário and other officials under his portfolio.

Wong added that the government will invite tenders for a box culvert project in northern Inner Harbour later this quarter.

Wong also said that while there was a need to raise the height of the embankments for the waterfront of the Outer Harbour area, the government would only be able to decide the new height after confirming the final design of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) East Line project.

Also replying to questions from lawmakers, Rosário said the government did not have a timetable as to when the Inner Harbour tidal gate project, which is slated to be built in the river between the west coast of the Macau Peninsula near Barra and Wanzai in Zhuhai, would finally get off the ground, as the central government has not yet given a green light for the cross-border project.

Meanwhile, Wong revealed that the government has completed a feasibility study of the flood prevention project on the western shore of Coloane, adding that the government aims to invite bids for the drafting of a proposal for the project in the current or next quarter.
