The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced in a statement last night that as the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast intense rainfall and rainstorms in Macau and its neighbouring areas today, all classes for kindergarteners, primary and secondary school students are suspended for the day.

The statement said that all education institutions should follow the bureau’s arrangements. The statement also reminded schools to remain open and arrange staff to look after students who may have arrived on campus. The bureau also urged schools to implement adverse weather protection measures such as setting up flood gates and ensuring moveable facilities are secured.

Meanwhile, the University of Macau (UM), University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Macau Polytechnic University (MPU) announced late last night that they will suspend all their classes and exams today, and more information would be announced as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, according to an SMG statement yesterday, the bureau held an online meeting with Hong Kong, Guangdong and the central government’s meteorological authorities yesterday to discuss the expected impact of the rainstorm. The statement underlined that as a trough of low pressure affecting the northern part of Guangdong is moving southwards, it is expected that the weather in Macau will become unstable, with heavy showers and thunderstorms from today to Saturday. The statement warned that as the weather will be unstable for several days, the public is advised to pay close attention to the latest weather information, take precautions against flooding and make travel plans in advance.

The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) also urged the public in a statement yesterday to keep young children and people with fragile health at home. However, the statement pointed out that nurseries, elderly service facilities, and day care centres will remain open today.

The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) urged residents in a statement yesterday to avoid working outdoors or in low-lying areas today. The statement also said that residents should be careful when using electric equipment, and walking on slippery surfaces. The statement underlined that employers should be aware of adverse weather announcements and notify workers about corresponding arrangements as soon as possible.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) also said in a statement yesterday that as the weather this week will be unstable, temples and churches located in low-lying areas should set up flood prevention measures to protect the city’s heritage from the adverse weather conditions.
