The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday that samples from a batch of mangoes imported from Taiwan tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, but were all sealed and destroyed, while none have entered the retail market.
According to the statement, the affected goods comprised 20 boxes weighing a total of 100 kilogrammes. The bureau said that the COVID-19 contingency plan was initiated immediately, while disinfection was conducted for the surrounding environment where the goods were kept. Information for follow-up and investigation on those who came in contact with the products, the statement pointed out, have been provided to the authorities.
The statement underlined that the bureau suspended the import of the products from the same source and involved producer for one week, which started yesterday. Businesses have been requested by the bureau to strengthen both the cleaning and disinfection of imported food products’ packaging, while the bureau urged the public to wash their hands frequently.
