A male non-resident worker (NRW) from Thailand was arrested last Friday for touching a woman’s buttocks while she was waiting for the green pedestrian light before she crossed the road in the city centre, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said at a regular press conference on Friday.
According to the spokesperson, the 37-year-old suspect surnamed Chai is a security guard.
The victim who is in her twenties reported to the police at 10 p.m. last Thursday that she was slapped on the buttocks by someone when she was waiting to cross the road in Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro last Thursday evening, the spokesperson said, adding that the victim felt she had been indecently assaulted, so she contacted the police.
The spokesperson noted that the person ran away from the scene after he had slapped the victim’s buttocks.
After scrutinising the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system, PSP officers identified and intercepted the suspect in the Rua de S. Lourenço area at about 10 a.m. the next day, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson pointed out that under questioning, Chai admitted that he was attracted by the victim’s back and committed the offence impulsively.
