An animation titled “Mui” created by local animation artist John Wong Weng Chon won the Best Film Award in the 1st Macao Documentary Competition, according to a statement on Monday from the Macao International Documentary Film Festival (MOIDF).
The statement noted that out of over 20 documentaries submitted “Mui” won and received “unanimous acclaim” from the competition’s jury, adding that they thought the work “goes beyond the conventional framework of documentary films and merges documentary film with animation”.
Through “peculiar WeChat voice messages”, “Mui”, the statement said, features the love-hate daily interactions between a grandma and her grandson, adding that the film and its format can create new possibilities for local documentary films.
Moreover, the film has also been chosen by a number of international film festivals this year such as the Kaohsiung Film Festival, which is among the best festivals in Asia for animated short films, the statement noted. It also won the Paris International Animation Film Festival’s Originality Award of the Horizons category.
Wong, who returned to Macau three years ago, hopes that audiences, after viewing the film, can “think of their intimate relationships with family members” and “learn how to get along with their loved ones to make life less miserable”, the statement underlined.
“Mui” and four other shortlisted works are being screened at the 6th Macao International Documentary Film Festival, which is currently being held, while the competition’s online exhibition will be launched on October 2.
