A residential flat on Avenida do Nordeste was ablaze in Taipa early yesterday morning, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said in a statement, adding that a woman found unresponsive in the flat was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.
The statement noted that the local victim, aged 58, is surnamed Tong.
The Judiciary Police said that the Fire Services Bureau (CB) received a report about the blaze at about 2:20 a.m. and found that the flat’s wooden front door was obstructed by an “object” from the inside when they rushed to the scene.
After pushing the door open, the firemen quickly extinguished the flames and rushed the victim who was crouching on the floor to the hospital, according to the statement.
The statement pointed out that the only bedroom in the flat was burnt in large areas, the windows were broken, and other parts of the flat were blackened by smoke.
The statement said that the woman did not show any carbon monoxide (CO1) poisoning symptoms at the time firemen found her in the flat.
The Judiciary Police have classified the case as suspected arson.
According to a statement by the Fire Services Bureau earlier yesterday, firefighters evacuated about 40 residents during the blaze, which broke out shortly after 2:20 a.m. at the flat in Iat Seng Building.
