A local man has been arrested for falsely reporting to the police that someone had impersonated him to claim his winnings from a football bet at a counter in the Macau Jockey Club, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Lai said that the suspect surnamed Leong is in his thirties and works in the gaming sector.

According to Lai, Leong reported to the police on December 3 that he had lost his football betting slip the day before, and when he told the betting counter staff at the Macau Jockey Club, he was informed that the winnings had been claimed. The winnings were 1,780 patacas.

After scrutinising the police forces’ city-wide CCTV camera system, police confirmed that someone had indeed collected the winnings, but that “someone” was actually Leong himself.

Lai said that Leong would not answer police officers’ questions, and claimed that he had “forgotten” that he had collected his winnings.

Leong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of falsely reporting a crime, Lai said.
