The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement yesterday that with the aim of extending the city’s festive atmosphere and injecting vitality into different neighbourhoods’ economies, parts of the installations of the “Light Up Macao 2022” event will be retained until the Lantern Festival on Sunday, enabling more residents and visitors to take photos and splash out in the neighbourhoods.

The statement reconfirmed that the third firework display in celebration of this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY) has been scheduled for Sunday night, while the “Strolling through Almeida Ribeiro – Pilot Scheme for a Pedestrian Area” will once again take place this coming weekend, adding that the Municipal Affairs Bureau’s (IAM) CNY lighting installations will also be extended through Sunday, the 15th day of the CNY.

Almeida Ribeiro, also known as “San Ma Lou” in Cantonese – “New Road”, is Macau’s main thoroughfare

The “Arraial in Taipa” (“悠氹仔”), “Arraial em Coloane” (“悠路環”) and “Arraial na [Rua dos] Ervanários” (“關前薈”) continue to provide residents and visitors with spots to take photos and have interactive experiences with augmented reality (AR), according to the statement, which also noted that the three fairs in conjunction with the “Light Up Macao 2022” event have launched a new model during the CNY aiming to promote the economies of different neighbourhoods in Taipa, Coloane and in the Rua dos Ervanários area, based on the objective of “attracting visitors ‒ experiences ‒ photography spots ‒ consumption”.

“Arraial” is Portuguese for an open-air neighbourhood festival.

Through the introduction of innovative technologies and experiences with lighting installations, the statement said, the combination of the various events aims to generate a new dynamic force in the respective areas, providing residents and visitors alike with a festive atmosphere during the CNY.
