Four Mongolians have been arrested for stealing cosmetics and other products, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The four suspects, two men and two women, are aged between 21 and 35. They told the police that they’re jobless.

According to Wong, the police received reports last month from seven different shop managers in a hotel shopping mall in Cotai that goods worth around a total of 160,000 patacas had been stolen. Police officers then scrutinised CCTV footage and identified three Mongolians as the shoplifters, who had already left Macau by then.

Wong said that on Friday two of the suspects had entered Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint along with two accomplices. The quartet, split into two groups of two, then went to another hotel shopping mall in Cotai and stole clothing and cosmetics worth a total of 8,500 patacas.

One group was arrested near the Barrier Gate checkpoint and the other in the mall. Police found all of the stolen goods on them, Wong noted.

Under questioning, the suspects admitted to stealing with the intent of selling the loot in Mongolia, adding that all the goods stolen last month had been sold for a total of 150,000 patacas.

The quartet were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Sunday, facing a theft charge, according to Wong.
