The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement on Friday that it is conducting tree protection works ahead of the typhoon and rainy season.

IAM’s tree maintenance personnel continue to inspect trees in different districts to protect the green environment and public safety, according to the statement.

The personnel have also pruned trees affected by “overcrowded branches and structural defects” and removed sick, withered or structurally damaged branches, the statement noted, with the aim to reduce tree crown weight and the wind load areas.

The statement said that critically sick trees that are at risk of collapsing have also been removed to minimise the risk of trees collapsing during strong winds and rainstorms.

The statement added that medicinal treatments for the prevention and control of tree pests and tree fertilisers have been launched, and the loosening of soil and weeding has been conducted.

Over 5,000 trees along streets have been pruned so far, while “irregularly shaped trees’ care and rescue” are continuously followed up. Tree supports have also been adjusted and reinforced and tree pit surfaces have been inspected and optimised, the statement said.

The statement urged members of the public not to enter work areas during the tree pruning. The public should also conduct regular inspections and arrange for tree pruning on their properties, as well as pay attention to tree growth conditions.

The public is also urged to avoid getting close to, or staying under trees during a rainstorm to avoid hazards from broken branches, according to the statement. For tree irregularities, the public can report them through “IAM Connect” or call 2833 7676.
