A Mongolian duo have been arrested for stealing a handbag worth HK$14,400 from a shop, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspects are a 57-year-old man surnamed Sharav and a 53-year-old woman surnamed Togtokh. They told the police they are friends and are jobless.
According to Cheong, on Friday afternoon a staff member of a shop on Rua dos Clérigos in Taipa reported to the police that a handbag worth around HK$14,400 had been stolen.
The police soon identified the suspects and arrested them in Taipa later that day. Under questioning, Sharav admitted to stealing the handbag and claimed that he had “thrown” it away, while Togtokh denied the accusation.
Cheong noted that police officers found HK$5,000 on each of them – the suspected proceeds from selling the stolen handbag.
The duo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, according to Cheong, adding that they also face charges of providing false information about their personal data as they had made false statements about their identity to the police.
