The Macau Hotel Association (MHA) recently held its regular meeting at Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau, where Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes gave its members an overview of the tourism industry’s development in the second quarter of this year, according to a statement by the organisers yesterday.

Senna Fernandes noted in the statement that Macau’s tourism industry is continuing to grow as the number of visitors arrivals is growing. In the first quarter of this year, the statement noted, the top three visitor segments were from the Chinese mainland, which increased by 118 percent year on year, followed by Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The statement added that three new hotels opened last year and provided 2,274 new hotel rooms.

Moreover, with exhibitions and conventions still among the “greatest attractions” for visitors, Senna Fernandes introduced the 11th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo (MITE), which was one of the major MICE events in  the second quarter. The MGTO chief said she expected tourism events’ diversification to continue bringing more mainland and international visitors to Macau.

MHA President Jocelyn Wong (王淑欣) said in the statement that the hotel industry would continue to play a “pivotal role” in promoting Macau’s tourism revival and attract tourists from around the world to visit Macau for memorable experiences, injecting “stronger power momentum into future development”.

The meeting was attended by over 30 industry representatives, along with MGTO and MHA representatives, according to the statement, which  did not say when the meeting was held.
