A Filipina domestic helper has been arrested for stealing cash and gold jewellery from her employer, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a regular press conference on Monday.

The suspect is a 32-year-old woman surnamed Alcantara who had worked for the victim for around a month.

According to Wong, last Wednesday a woman reported to the police that 1,000 yuan (1,130 patacas) and gold jewellery worth 58,100 patacas had been stolen by her domestic helper. Wong said that the police later arrived at the flat on Estrada Marginal da Areia Preta and questioned Alcantara, who admitted to the crime.

Alcantara claimed that she had pawned the jewellery for HK$41,000 and the ill-gotten money had then been taken to the Philippines with the help of her Filipino friends.

Alcantara has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, Wong said.
