Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng pledged yesterday that the Macau government will continue to study the possible implementation of new measures aiming to further support the ongoing development of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) yesterday.
Ho made the remarks during a regular meeting of the zone’s administrative committee yesterday.
Yesterday’s meeting, which was held on Zhuhai’s Hengqin island, was the sixth meeting of the zone’s administrative committee, according to the statement.
The zone was inaugurated in September 2021.
The Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone’s top decision-making body is its administrative committee, which is jointly headed by Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong and Ho.
The zone’s executive committee, which is run under the administrative committee, is the body tasked with the zone’s daily functioning and execution of tasks. The executive committee is headed by Macau Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong.
During yesterday’s meeting, which was co-chaired by Ho and Wang, Ho noted that Macau and Guangdong have been working together intensively with the aim of converting the zone into a “main base” for promoting Macau’s ongoing economic diversification drive, according to the statement.
Ho underlined that his government is integrating Macau’s development into the zone’s development in compliance with its ongoing “1+4” appropriate economic diversification model.
The Macau government’s 1+4 model aims to consolidate the development of the city’s tourism and leisure industry while putting special emphasis on promoting the development of four new key industries, namely 1) big health, 2) modern finance, 3) high-tech, and 4) conventions and exhibitions as well as culture and sport.
Ho pledged that his government will continue to “cherish” the central government’s strong support by grasping the “precious” opportunities created by the zone’s development.
During yesterday’s meeting, Wang noted that next year will be the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), when the first-phase development goals of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin are scheduled to be achieved, according to the GCS statement.
Wang also said that the Guangdong government plans to delegate more of its provincial-level administrative powers, functions and duties to the zone.
