A man from the mainland has been arrested for hocking a “gold” necklace in a local pawn shop, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 61-year-old suspect surnamed Huang told the police he’s a retiree.

According to Lei, a pawn shop manager reported to the police on Saturday that a fake gold necklace had been pawned earlier that day for 40,000 patacas by Huang and an accomplice.

Huang was arrested on Sunday when he attempted to leave Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Under questioning, he claimed that he did not receive any payment for his part in the swindle and that he was unaware that the necklace was fake. He also claimed that he merely followed the instructions of his friend who used his identification documents to pawn the necklace.

Huang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Lei said.
