Now in its 14th edition, this year’s Macau International Short Film Festival will showcase 126 short films (SHORTS) and 10 music videos (VOLUME) from different parts of the world by the finalists chosen from 4,051 submissions, according to a statement on Friday from Creative Macau and the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM).
The festival will take place at Teatro Capitol on Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva from December 5 to 13.
The statement noted that the submissions this year came from Europe (39 percent), Asia (38 percent), South America (10 percent) and North America (8 percent), while the remaining were from other places. The finalists are from Argentina, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Japan, and Macau, just to name a few.
The statement said that the finalists from the SHORTS and VOLUME categories will compete for the festival’s 17 awards in the “Official Selection” 2023, which comprises 67 works of fiction, 18 documentaries, 25 animations and 10 music videos.
Most of the film directors are young graduates, those taking their masters and doctorates, and some who are professionally established, the statement added, tackling different themes and subjects through their films.
The festival will also see two Grand Jury panel members, Swedish director Alexa Landgren and German director Malte Stein, attend the event, along with foreign finalist directors competing for the SHORTS awards.
The festival’s opening will feature the guest film “The Bank Loan” from Spain along with 15 more films from Europe and other places.
A symposium will also be held on December 12, which features a roundtable and masterclasses with guests such as local film directors, and festival organising committee member and Grand Jury President João Francisco Pinto, according to the statement.
