A collective exhibition is being held at the Rui Cunha Foundation gallery titled “Halftone 23” by the non-profit cultural association Halftone — Macau Photographic Association*, showcasing 30 photographs taken by some of its members, displaying a variety of photographic styles and genres until Saturday.

Unveiled yesterday, Portuguese photojournalist Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro, who is one of the association’s founders, a member of its board of directors and the exhibition’s principal organiser, told The Macau Post Daily yesterday that the five-day exhibition is an opportunity to collectively showcase Halftone members’ works.

Speaking at the gallery, Lobo Pinheiro said the exhibition was intended to be held annually in Macau every December.

Lobo Pinheiro added that the exhibition is particularly important as it is their first big exhibition and  Halftone’s membership has grown to over 40 people, compared to when the association held its first – but smaller – exhibition in 2021, the year it was established.

Regarding the works on display, Lobo Pinheiro said that an open call was made to association members and the number of photographs they received was beyond what they expected, which was only getting around 15 to 20 pictures.

There was no specific theme for the open call, with the submissions featuring a variety of genres and styles of photography ranging from photojournalism to fashion photography, he said.

The main goal in hosting the exhibition is to promote photography, the association, and the works of participating members, Lobo Pinheiro said, noting: “It’s not too much time, it’s only five days, but I think the people are going to enjoy these pictures”.

The gallery is open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free.

*A statement from the Rui Cunha Foundation says that Halftone “aims to promote contemporary photography in all its aspects” and is an inclusive and comprehensive association that is open to those interested in photography as an artistic or documentary expression, regardless of their experience or practice.
