Macau recorded a daily average of around 114,000 visitor arrivals during the four-day Christmas holiday period between Saturday and Tuesday, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the same period of pre-pandemic 2019, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement yesterday.
According to the statement, Macau recorded a total of around 456,000 visitor arrivals during the four days, while around 450,000 visitor arrivals were recorded during the same period of 2019.
The data indicated that Macau’s number of visitor arrivals during festival-celebrating holidays “has now even exceeded” the one in pre-pandemic years, showing that the recovery of the city’s tourism industry was “ideal”, the statement said.
The statement also said that the average occupancy rate of hotel guestrooms reached 90.8 percent during the four-day period from December 23 to 26, an increase of 2.7 percentage points from 88.1 percent last month.
According to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC), the average occupancy rate of hotel guestrooms stood at 82.8 percent in October. The bureau is scheduled to announce last month’s average occupancy rate tomorrow.
In the statement, the Macau Government Tourism Office also said that its ongoing “Light up Macao 2023” was providing residents and tourists alike with “a new type of night entertainment experience”.
The “Light up Macao 2023”, which is running until February 25, is showcasing 36 light installations and 20 interactive installations in 34 locations across seven neighbourhoods, the statement noted.
Meanwhile, Macau recorded a total of 679,584 visitor arrivals during a seven-day holiday period from Wednesday last week to Tuesday comprising the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Establishment Anniversary Day on December 20, Winter Solstice on December 22, and Christmas, or a daily average of 97,083, according to immigration statistics released by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday.
During the seven days, December 23, Saturday, saw the highest number of visitor arrivals of 133,603, according to PSP immigration data.
Winter Solstice is an ancient Chinese festival. Macau is the only place in China where it is a public holiday.
