The Macau Customs Service (SA) nabbed four men involved in a people-smuggling case on Thursday, according to an SA statement yesterday.

The four suspects from the mainland are aged between 32 and 44.

The case occurred last Thursday, when customs officers noticed a suspicious motorised wooden boat in the Outer Harbour at night. Customs officers intercepted a man suspected of trying to illegally enter Macau on the shore at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf and three people on a boat – the skipper, a suspected “snake head” and a male suspected of trying to enter Macau illegally, the statement said.

“Snake head” is local Cantonese jargon for a people smuggler.

Among the four suspects, two have been arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigration, while the other two were taken to the Public Security Police (PSP) for illegally entering Macau, one of whom was officially barred from entering Macau.

Customs officers constantly apply scientific and technological equipment such as intelligent maritime surveillance systems and infrared night vision cameras to conduct round-the-clock surveillance of areas at high risk of illegal activities, according to the statement.

The statement urged members of the public to report suspected illegal border-crossing activities by contacting the Macau Customs Service by phone on 2896 5001, fax 289 65003, or email info@customs.gov.mo.
