A drunken elderly man damaged lane separators on Rua do Almirante Sérgio with a utility knife when jaywalking, according to a video circulating on social media platforms on Wednesday night.

The Public Security Police (PSP) released a statement yesterday in response to the video, saying that their officers arrested a 60-year-old local man at the junction of Travessa dos Vendilhões and Rua da Praia do Manduco at about 8 a.m. yesterday.

The statement said, according to a PSP investigation, that railings at the scene were damaged and broken, and that a blue plastic road barrier on the pavement was also pushed out into the lane by the suspect, affecting the safety of other road users.

Under questioning, according to the statement, the suspect told the police that he had consumed alcoholic beverages on Wednesday night, claiming he forgot what he had done. PSP officers found a utility knife on him.

The suspect was fined and transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday for breaching the road law and possessing a prohibited weapon.
