A woman from the mainland, who herself has been overstaying for nearly two years in Macau, has been arrested for renting three local residential units and renting two of them out to overstayers, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Wang is in her forties. A male overstayer surnamed Yu, who is also in his forties, assisted Wang in renting a flat to a female overstayer, whose surname was not revealed by the police. Wang and Yu told the police that they’re jobless.

According to Kong, PSP officers conducted an investigation based on an illegal activity report, questioning Wang in her flat on Estrada de S. Francisco. The police soon discovered that Wang and Yu, who was also staying in her flat, were overstayers.

Additionally, Wang had leased the flat to Yu and another overstayer, recommended by Yu. All three individuals stayed in separate flats, rented by Wang using the names of local residents who she claimed were her friends. Yu told the police that he paid 200 to 400 patacas per day for the flat.

As the three residential units were involved in providing illegal accommodation, the Public Security Police reported the case to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), which confirmed the units’ status as illegal inns and subsequently sealed them off.

The trio told the police that they overstayed in Macau for casino gambling.

Wang and Yu have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and are facing charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration and document forgery. The police suspect that Wang had used fake Slips of Authorisation to Stay since May 2022, while Yu showed an ID card belonging to another person when questioned by officers.
