Consumer price inflation rises 0.92 pct in April

Macau's consumer price inflation for last month rose by 0.92 percent year on year, the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

According to a DSEC statement, the price indices of Education (+5.05 percent), Health (+3.02 percent) and Clothing & Footwear (+2.54 percent) saw notable year-on-year growth. The price indices of Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (+1.34 percent) and Housing & Fuels (+0.52 percent) increased due to higher charges for eating out as well as higher prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity.

On the other hand, the price indices of Transport (-3.49 percent) and Communication (-0.07 percent) dropped.

Month on month, the consumer price index (CPI) fell by 0.02 percent in April. The price indices of Recreation & Culture (-1.32 percent), Transport (-0.70 percent) and Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.03 percent) declined, but the price indices of Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (+0.51 percent), Clothing and Footwear (+0.50 percent) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services (+0.36 percent) increased.

For the 12-month period including last month, the average CPI grew by 1.04 percent from the previous period, with notable rises in the price indices of Education (+6.59 percent), Recreation & Culture (+6.47 percent) and Clothing & Footwear (+4.61 percent).

The average CPI for the first four months of 2024 climbed by 1.12 percent year-on-year.

Inflation measured by the consumer price index (CPI) is defined as the change in the prices of a basket of goods and services that are typically purchased by specific groups of households.
