Integrated resort (IR) operator MGM is calling on Macau’s creative talents to participate in the “Barra District Logo and Visual Identity Design Contest”, with submissions open until August 23 to entrants of all ages, according to a statement from the company earlier this week.

The statement noted that the contest, which is being held in collaboration with the Macao Illustrators Association, is one of the four pillars of the Barra District “Summer Hype” Series Event. The IR aims to “further stimulate public participation through this contest and constantly instil novel tourism offerings filled with contemporary, trendy, artistic, and lifestyle elements into Barra district”, the statement said.

The statement added that the contest features a “Student Group” and an “Open Group”, with participants invited to create “renewed visual identities” for the district including collateral designs such as promotional materials, along with logos for the five buildings within the area.

According to the contest’s website, participants can base their designs on the Barra district’s elements such as its architecture and history, as well as blend it with “innovative elements”.

The contest’s four major selection criteria are “Creativity and Innovation”, “Design Concept”, “Functionality and Practicality”, and “Visual Presentation”, the MGM statement pointed out.

There will be 10 winners, which comprise gold, silver and bronze awards along with seven finalists, for each of the competition’s categories, the statement said. Winners will receive cash prizes of up to 40,000 patacas, while their works may be exhibited in the district in September and winning design will be used as the district’s new logo, the statement said.

The winners will be announced during an award ceremony on September 21, the competition website added.

Moreover, the company will host “Introduction Tours” on Saturday and Sunday to help participants understand Barra district’s cultural and historical significance, according to the statement. The tours will be held at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

“Barra” is Portuguese for “harbour entrance”.
