The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has said that the second phase of its green promenade project along the peninsula’s southern shore will be carried out through three separate tenders.

IAM officials made the remarks during a closed-door meeting with members of the Central District Community Service Consultative Council on Wednesday.

Three members of the government-appointed council briefed reporters after the meeting, held at the activity centre in the Patane Market Municipal Complex.

The IAM officials briefed the council about the bureau’s latest progress of the project.

The bureau said early this year that it expected the green promenade’s second phase to get off the ground at the end of this year.

The green promenade’s first phase, which is located between the Macau Science Centre and the Kun Iam Statue, opened in 2021. The first phase, officially known as Kun Iam Statue Waterfront Leisure Area, covers 15,000 square metres.

When the bureau launched the first phase of the green promenade in early 2020, it said that the second phase was slated to start at the Kun Iam Statue, running under the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge (colloquially known as the “old bridge”), passing near Macau Tower, before finishing near Barra.

The bureau announced further details of the second phase in January this year when it said that the second phase will only start from the Zone B land reclamation area west of the old bridge, passing near Macau Tower, before arriving at the Gate of Understanding in Sai Van. This means that the first and second phases will not be connected.

The bureau said in January that the green promenade’s second-phase project, covering 60,000 square metres, was expected to take two years.

The public were informed by the government in early July that the green promenade’s second-phase project will be carried out through separate tenders, when the bureau launched a public tender for “Zone 1” of the green promenade’s second phase.

According to an announcement in the Official Gazette (BO) in early July, the “Zone 1” project will include recreational and leisure areas, games area, waterfront walking/jogging trails, and fishing platforms.

The bureau launched a public tender in September for “Zone 2” of the green promenade’s second phase. The “Zone 2” project will include cycling trails, walking/jogging trails, green areas, recreational and leisure areas, and fishing platforms, according to an announcement in the gazette in September.

During Wednesday’s press briefing, the three councillors quoted the IAM officials as saying that the bureau expects to launch a public tender in the first quarter of next year for “Zone 3” of the green promenade’s second phase.

According to the press briefing, the IAM officials said that the bureau now expects the “Zone 1” project to get off the ground at the end of this month and to be completed in the third quarter of next year.

The IAM officials also said that the bureau expects the “Zone 2” project to start in the first quarter of next year and to be completed in the fourth quarter of next year.

The officials did not reveal the expected completion time of the “Zone 3” project.

This undated handout photo downloaded from the Municipal Affairs Bureau’s (IAM) website yesterday shows the bureau’s ongoing project to consolidate the embankment of the Zone B land reclamation area west of the old bridge, in preparation for the upcoming second phase of its green promenade project. The consolidation work started in August this year and is slated to be completed in April next year.
