SJM Resorts said in a statement on Thursday that Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) Resort Master Mixologist Frederick Ma (馬銘康) won the “World Bartender of the Year” and “Market Challenge Winner” prize at the IBA (International Bartenders Association) World Cocktail Championship 2024 in Portugal’s Autonomous Region of Madeira.
GLP is located in Cotai.
The statement said that this year’s championship comprised mixologists from 67 countries and regions that vied for the title. The championships had the categories of sparkling, after-dinner, long drinks, before-dinner, sensory evaluation, knowledge, speed, and cocktail creation. Ma emerged victorious with his “Winds of Prosperity” cocktail, marking the first time that a representative from Macau garnered the competition’s highest honour.
The statement said that the cocktail is “a masterful interplay of flavours and textures”. It has a base of Madeira wine, with its smoky caramel notes providing “a full-bodied foundation”, according to the statement.
The statement said that organic mezcal adds complexity to the drink, while amaretto and verjuice provide “perfectly balanced sweetness and acidity”. Subtle Asian spices and homegrown thyme contribute aromatic depth and is also garnished with white and red raisins, dried figs, and thyme.
The statement said that guests can sample the “Winds of Prosperity” at contemporary Portuguese restaurant Mesa by José Avillez located at Level 3 of THE KARL LAGERFELD MACAU in Cotai.
