A bus hit roadside railings and a lamp post yesterday on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida (荷蘭園大馬路) near Lai Kei Ice Cream eatery, at around 1:30 p.m., according to the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday.
According to the statement, the incident involved a bus driver, a local man in his fifties.
PSP officers confirmed that the driver passed a breathalyser, ruling out drunk-driving as a factor in the crash.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by the driver accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the bus to run out of control mounting the kerb, hitting the roadside barrier and colliding with a lamp post before coming to a halt.
The front of the bus was damaged with the bumper crumpled. There were passengers on the bus, but no injuries were reported, the statement said.
From a photo circulating on the internet, the bus involved in the accident is owned by Transmac.
The bus driver faces a charge of “failing to stop safely,” and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
