The Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) announced in a statement last night that Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai will travel to Heilongjiang’s provincial capital Harbin today for a three-day visit where he will attend tomorrow’s opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games.

The 2025 Asian Winter Games will be held between tomorrow and Friday next week, with its opening ceremony to be held at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre tomorrow.

Last night’s GCS statement said that while in Harbin Sam will also meet with top leaders of the nation’s north easternmost province.

During Sam’s absence from Macau, Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon will be acting chief executive, the statement noted.

Sam is scheduled to return to Macau on Saturday.

The Asian Winter Games launched in 1986, is normally held every four years although this is the first since 2017.

This is the second time that the Asian Winter Games is held in Harbin, the other being in 1996, and the third time in China, with Jilin’s provincial capital Changchun in 2007 being the third.
