A man from the mainland was arrested on Monday for stealing eleven gold grains and cash, totalling 305,000 patacas, from a medical clinic, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a special press conference yesterday.
The 38-year-old suspect surnamed Huang told the police that he is jobless. The victim is a local elderly man who works at the clinic in the central district.
According to Chong, on January 22, Huang climbed into the clinic at around 9 p.m. using the renovation scaffolding of a neighbouring building to commit the theft. After succeeding, he left the scene by the same route and quickly departed Macau through the Qingmao pedestrian checkpoint. The following morning, the victim went to the clinic and discovered that a drawer had been pried open. Eleven gold grains weighing 1 tael each, worth a total of about 286,000 patacas, along with 3,000 patacas, HK$5,000, and 10,000 yuan in cash, had been stolen, totalling 305,000 patacas. The victim immediately reported the case to the police.
The police apprehended Huang on Monday at the Barrier Gate checkpoint as he was re-entering Macau. The police confiscated 30,000 yuan from Huang, which they suspect are part of the loot.
Huang was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a theft charge.
