The Global Carbon Credit Market Development Forum, a parallel activity of the Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2025MIECF), took place yesterday afternoon at The Venetian Macao in Cotai, which was geared towards providing a platform to facilitate dialogue between governments and enterprises.
A previous statement by the MIECF organisers noted that the one-day event also aimed to deepen carbon market exchanges and contribute to diversified industrial development.
Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raymond Tam Vai Man remarked in his opening speech that “since President Xi Jinping announced the dual carbon goals at the United Nations Secretary Assembly in 2020, the Macau SAR government has consistently aligned with national strategies”, with yesterday’s forum being leveraged to deepen international collaboration. “Through policy dialogue, technical exchange and market synergy, we aim to explore innovative practices in global climate governance”, Tam added.
Tam also said that the forum is a platform for sharing low-carbon technologies and emission practices, as well as being a strategic opportunity for Macau to leverage its One Country, Two Systems advantages, noting: “By linking Portuguese-speaking countries across four continents with international markets, Macau will continue refining policies supporting international carbon market development, empower local institutions to pioneer pilot initiatives in this field, and inject Macau momentum into this global carbon market.
The event also included speeches by guests including Vice Prime Minister, Minister Coordinator for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, in which he highlighted his country’s conservation and protection of its environment, along with Macau’s geopolitical position in connecting the East and West.
“Macau plays a unique role in fostering political connection and facilitating bilateral financial ties. These advantageous positions enhance cooperation among neighbouring countries, allowing for the exchange of knowledge technologically and on funding addressing present environmental challenges”.
Attended by experts, scholars, business leaders and international organisation representatives from different parts of the world, the forum yesterday also witnessed the signing of five agreements, covering areas such as corporate cooperation and technological innovation.
