A local middle-aged woman has lost 650,000 patacas in an online investment scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Siu Keong said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Cheong, the woman met a man online and they become friends on a social media platform in February. The man claimed to be an “investment company consultant” and lured her into investing. After being persuaded, the victim downloaded an investment software and made three separate payments totalling 650,000 patacas for “virtual currency”. Following these payments, her account showed a profit of 20,000 patacas.
However, the victim recently lost contact with the man and suspected she had been scammed. She reported a total loss of 650,000 patacas to the police on Monday.
