Average daily exceeds 2019 level

Macau recorded some 850,000 visitor arrivals during the mainland’s five-day Labour Day holiday, which started on Thursday last week and ended on Monday this week, or a daily average of about 170,000, an increase of 40.7 percent from last year’s corresponding period, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced in a statement yesterday.

Last year’s Labour Day holiday also lasted five days.

The statement noted that the average daily number of some 170,000 visitor arrivals recorded during this year’s Labour Day holiday period even represented an increase of 7.5 percent from the average daily number of about 158,000 visitor arrivals recorded during the Labour Day holiday period in pre-pandemic 2019.

In pre-COVID-19 pandemic, the Labour Day holiday period lasted four days.

The statement also noted that Friday recorded the highest single-day number of visitor arrivals during this year’s Labour Day holiday period, at nearly 222,000.

According to the statement, the about 850,000 visitor arrivals recorded during this year’s Labour Day holiday comprised around 679,000 from the mainland, 111,000 from Hong Kong, 9,100 from China’s Taiwan region, and 51,000 foreign visitors.

According to data released by MGTO on its website, Macau recorded 176,873 visitor arrivals on the first day of this year’s Workers’ Day holiday in the mainland, 221,926 on the second day, 204,041 on the third day, 154,411 on the fourth day, and 92,568 on the last day, up 45.4 percent, 47.2 percent, 32.6 percent, 45.6 percent, and 29.4 percent year on year respectively.

Consequently, Macau recorded 849,819 visitor arrivals in total during this year’s five-day Labour Day holiday, up 40.7 percent from last year’s corresponding period, according to the MGTO data.

In terms of single-day numbers, the nearly 222,000 visitor arrivals recorded on the second day of the mainland’s Labour Day holiday this year exceeded the previous post-pandemic record of some 219,000 visitor arrivals, which were recorded on the fourth day of the mainland’s Spring Festival Golden Week holiday this year, i.e., the third day of the Year of the Snake.

Macau’s highest single-day number of visitor arrivals was recorded on the third day of the Year of the Pig in pre-pandemic 2019, at some 226,000.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s MGTO statement also said that the average occupancy rate of hotel guestrooms reached 94.1 percent during this year’s Labour Day holiday period, an increase of five percentage points from last year’s corresponding period.

The occupancy rate stood at 98.1 percent on Friday, the highest during the five-day period, the statement said.
