Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) Director Derby Lau Wai Meng said yesterday that there are still “several thousand” users of 3G services in Macau.
There will be no more 3G services in Macau from early next month as no telecom operators applied for the renewal of their 3G licences.
Lau made the remarks during a press conference at the bureau’s headquarters in the city centre about its issuance of new stamps.
According to Lau, most of the current 3G accounts are inactive users.
Macau currently has three telecom operators running mobile telecommunications services – CTM, China Telecom (Macau), and Hutchison Telephone (Macau), after SmarTone (Macau) announced in August last year the cessation of its services in Macau.
However, only CTM and China Telecom are running 5G services in Macau, while Hutchison Telephone is only running 4G services here.
Lau underlined yesterday that the respective telecom operators have informed their existing 3G customers through various channels about the upcoming termination of 3G services, urging the respective customers to contact their telecom operators as soon as possible with the aim of ensuring that they will smoothly switch to 4G or 5G services.
Lau underlined that those still using 3G services in Macau only account for a very small percentage of telecom service users in the city.
