Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raymond Tam Vai Man said yesterday that the government is now planning to build a park and an underground carpark in an area in central Taipa next to the Nam San Garden residential estate initially earmarked for a temporary tyre park.

Tam made the remarks when replying to oral interpellations by lawmakers during a plenary session in the legislature’s hemicycle.

The government planned in 2020 to build a temporary tyre park on a large area comprising idle plots BT11, BT12, BT8, BT9a, and BT9, but decided in 2022 to axe that project.

The large area on Avenida de Kwong Tung is located between the Nam San Garden residential estate and the Nova Taipa Garden residential estate.

The government launched land auctions in 2023 for plots BT8 and BT9a earmarked for private residential development projects, but no bid was then received for Plot BT8, while only one bid was submitted for Plot BT9a.

An area comprising plots BT11 and BT12, located between Nam San Garden and plots BT8 and BT9a, was planned in 2023 for a park and an underground ice-skating rink. However, the government last year indicated its decision to cancel its plan to build an underground ice-skating rink on plots BT11 and BT12 when it said that it was looking for another location suitable to build an ice-skating rink after concluding that the area comprising plots BT11 and BT12 is unsuitable for the purpose.

During yesterday’s plenary session, Tam said that the government was now planning to develop plots BT11 and BT12 together into a public park as well as a public carpark underneath the park.

The policy secretary did not give a schedule as to when the government expects to launch the project.

Tam also said that the government will study the feasibility of setting up a skatepark on part of the future park, pointing out that the area comprising plots BT11 and BT12 is quite large because of which the area could be used for setting up facilities for various recreational and sports purposes.

Meanwhile, Tam also said during yesterday’s plenary session that the government will drain stagnant water from idle plots A3 and A4 in Nam Van district, located between Grand Emperor Hotel and the Finance and IT Centre, in the near future.

Afterwards, Tam said, the government will study the feasibility of setting up a temporary recreational area and a temporary open-air carpark on the area comprising plots A3 and A4.

Tam also said that the government will study the feasibility of using the site where the now-defunct Macau Jockey Club horse-racing track in Taipa is located for different purposes on a temporary basis, while the plot off Taipa’s northern coast initially earmarked for an “Ocean World” theme park will now continue to be part of the government’s land resources before its permanent use is finally decided.
