A local man was arrested on Monday for driving despite being banned and evading responsibility, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Cheong identified the suspect as a 24-year-old salesman surnamed Mok, who was banned from driving between November 26, 2024 and July 25 this year, due to speeding.
According to Cheong, the police received a report about a car accident on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen (孫逸仙大馬路) at around 2 p.m. on Monday. The reporting driver told the police that he was changing from the left lane to the right lane when he was struck in the rear by a car in the right lane. After the collision, the car did not stop and fled in the direction of the Macau Science Centre.
Using citywide CCTV surveillance, the police identified Mok as the suspect and summoned him to a police station later that day. The police discovered that Mok was currently serving a driving ban. Under questioning, Mok admitted to driving while banned but denied evading responsibility in the case. He claimed that while driving, he heard a noise when the car in front moved from the left lane to the right. As he was unsure whether he had collided with the car, he did not stop to check. After parking at the Macau Science Centre, he noticed damage to the front of his car and finally realised he had struck the other car.
Mok has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of driving during a ban and evasion of responsibility.
