Aiming to protect the safety of road users, the government-appointed Higher Traffic Council (CSV) has authorised, in coordination with the Transport Bureau (DSAT) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the launch of a speed detection system on the Macau and Taipa ends of Macao Bridge from midnight tomorrow.

The DAST and PSP announced the measure in a joint statement yesterday.

Starting from midnight tomorrow, 22 fixed-point speed detection systems and four section speed detection systems will be operational at various locations on Macao Bridge, including its Macau Peninsula and Taipa ends and the spur road in Pac On near the main entrance and exit, as well as the two motorcycle lanes on the bridge, the statement said, adding that the measure aims to prevent speed limit violations.

Besides, the statement reminded drivers and riders that the bridge has different speed limits of 80, 60, and 40 kilometres per hour in various sections. The statement pointed out that some ramps and below-gradient sections in the motorcycle lanes have a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h. “Appropriate speed limit and traffic advisory signs have been installed around the bridge,” the statement said.

According to Article 98, Paragraphs 1 to 5 of the Road Traffic Law, drivers violating speed limits on the bridge face fines ranging from 600 patacas to 20,000 patacas. Repeat offenders or those who severely exceed the speed limit may also face a driving ban, the statement warned. Drivers and riders are urged not to exceed speed limits on the bridge and to pay attention to road safety, the statement added.
