The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) released a video yesterday in celebration of “Sustainable Gastronomy Day”, aiming to raise public awareness for, and the significance of, sustainable gastronomy.

Macau was designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017. Starting the following year, Macau has joined the rest of the world in annually promoting Sustainable Gastronomy Day* on June 18, according to an MGTO statement yesterday.

MGTO’s video clip, titled “The Spice of Sustainability” and lasting around three minutes, calls on people to “cherish food and demonstrate environmentally friendly methods of food handling”, according to the statement. It features remarks by MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Macao University of Tourism (UTM) Food and Beverage Division Director Hans Lee Rasmussen, and Society of Food & Environmental Health (Macao) founding President Ruby O (柯學明).

The statement said that in the video, MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes highlighted the importance of spices and herbs in global cuisines, while also noting that they are very much part of Macanese cuisine. Macanese Gastronomy, the statement noted, was inscribed on the Representative List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.

Rasmussen, meanwhile, spoke about the collaboration with students and younger generations to implement food waste management practices, while O pointed out the importance of increasing sustainability awareness in the community, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the statement also said that the upcoming “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” is this year themed “spices and herbs”. Scheduled for mid-July, it will gather participants from around the world to “explore and weave inspirations from different food cultures”, the statement pointed out.
