The sole electoral list representing the social services and educational sector that will run for the sector’s only seat in the upcoming indirect legislative election, the Social Service and Education Promotion Association, submitted its political platform and the name of its sole candidate to the Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission (CAEAL) yesterday.

The legislature’s 12 indirectly-elected seats comprise four seats representing the city’s industrial, commercial and financial sector, three seats from the professional sector, two seats from the labour sector, two seats from the cultural and sports sector, and one seat from the social services and educational sector.

The 2025 direct and indirect legislative elections will take place on September 14.

The labour sector is the only sector where more than one list will run in the upcoming indirect election, while only one list will run for each of the other four sectors, including the social services and educational sector.

Consequently, while the candidates of the two lists for the labour sector will compete for the sector’s two indirectly-elected seats, all candidates of the other four sectors’ electoral lists are slated to be elected uncontested, including the social services and educational sector.

The number of candidates fielded by each indirect election list must be the same as the respective sector’s number of seats. Consequently, in theory, each electoral list for the social services and educational sector can field one candidate only.

Ho seeks re-election for social services & educational seat

The Social Service and Education Promotion Association list has fielded sitting lawmaker Alan Ho Ion Sang as its candidate for the 2025 indirect election of the social services and educational sector’s only one seat.

Ho, who had been a directly-elected lawmaker since 2009, became an indirectly-elected legislator representing the social services and educational sector in the indirect election four years ago.

Ho is currently one of the vice chairmen of the influential Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (commonly known as Kai Fong in Cantonese).

Speaking to reporters after submitting his electoral list’s political platform at the Public Administration Building on Rua do Campo yesterday, Ho said that his election platform lays out measures and policies in line with four major principles, namely promoting innovative social services, developing diversified education, building a liveable city, and creating a happy Macau.

Ho said that his electoral list will focus on three main areas, namely promoting diversified and smart social services, promoting fair and diversified education, and promoting the creation of a happy home and improvements in residents’ quality of life.
