Five middle-aged local women and a young local woman have fallen victim to separate online shopping scams, resulting in a total loss of 9,696 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chao Teng Hin said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Chao, the police recently received six reports related to online shopping scams. Between June 18 and 25, the victims encountered Facebook pages claiming to be travel agencies offering attractive deals. These pages advertised low-priced packages for hotel suites, buffet vouchers, and various travel products.
Enticed by the offers, the victims continued to communicate with the scammers on social media to discuss transaction details. They were ultimately instructed to make payments via MPay for their purchases. However, after transferring the funds, the victims did not receive any confirmation receipts. Some even reported losing contact with the scammers when they attempted to obtain refunds.
Chao noted that the amounts lost by the six victims ranged from 800 to 2,980 patacas, with a total loss of 9,696 patacas.
