A local woman was arrested on Friday for stealing two smartphones, worth 12,400 patacas in total, from a shop, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Kong identified the suspect as a female in her forties, surnamed Ng, who told the police that she’s jobless.

According to Kong, the police received a report on June 18 from the owner of a shop on Rua Três do Bairro Va Tai (華大新村第三街). The owner told the police that he had placed two smartphones on a table at the entrance of the shop while inventorying goods, and later discovered that both phones had vanished. Using the shop’s surveillance footage, the victim discovered that a woman had stolen the phones while he was distracted. The victim then immediately reported a total loss of 12,400 patacas to the police.

Through their citywide CCTV surveillance system, the police identified Ng as the suspect and summoned her to a police station on Friday. Under questioning, Ng admitted to stealing the phones out of greed, and claimed that she had the two phones at her home.

Ng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge.
