The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has announced that the two firework displays scheduled for tonight have been postponed due to the impact of Typhoon Matmo.

A MGTO statement quoted the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) as saying that the typhoon posed safety risks for the installing and launching of the fireworks. After a comprehensive assessment, MGTO decided to postpone the 33rd Macau International Fireworks Display Contest’s two shows – by British and Brazilian companies – along with the Fireworks Carnival, which originally was slated to take place next to the waterfront of Macau Science Centre in Nape tonight.

Both displays are the last of the contest, which consists of 10 competitors displaying their pyrotechnic shows on five nights, originally scheduled from September 6 to October 6 (the eve of tomorrow’s Mid-Autumn Festival), two companies on each night.

MGTO said in the statement that it will closely monitor weather updates provided by the local observatory, and will announce the new date in due course, aiming to ensure that residents and visitors can adjust their plans accordingly.
