The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) renewed three cooperation agreements in Macau on Monday, aiming to mark a new stage of collaboration to deepen joint research, attract global scientific talent, and enhance regional innovation, according to a statement from FDCT yesterday.

The statement did not say where the signing ceremony took place.

During a meeting on Monday, NSFC Vice Director and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Lu Jianhua, who headed the delegation, signed the renewed agreements with FDCT President Vincent U U Sang, the statement said.

According to the statement, the updated documents aim to strengthen cooperation between the Chinese mainland and Macau in joint research funding, international scientific talent recruitment, and cross-border technological collaboration.

Lu was quoted by the statement as saying that the NSFC “has always attached great importance to scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges with Macau,” and added that the renewed agreements would further consolidate previous achievements while leveraging Macau’s advantages to boost innovation capacity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Meanwhile, U expressed gratitude for the NSFC’s continued support since their first cooperation agreement in 2016, the statement said, noting that the updated documents “cover a broader range of areas” and better align with the evolving landscape of scientific collaboration. He was quoted as saying that “by leveraging Macau’s international network, we aim to make the most of Macau’s strengths to serve the country’s needs.”

Since 2016, the two parties have jointly funded 133 research projects and co-organised nine academic seminars, contributing to stronger research ties between the Chinese mainland and Macau, the statement said, adding that with the updated agreements, the NSFC and the FDCT will further support high-level academic conferences in Macau, aim to attract international talent and propel scientific cooperation to new heights.
