A premiere was held at The Londoner Macao in Cotai on Saturday for the 3rd New Art Studies in Filming - Micro Movie Support Programme’s cohort of five Macao-made microfilms.

Sponsored by Sands China for the third consecutive year, the programme is organised by the Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District (CIPA), aiming to “broaden the development platform for Macau’s young filmmakers through funding and training”, the integrated resort operator said in a statement on Saturday.

This year’s programme saw 16 teams submitting scripts, with five chosen after a judging process to receive funding, the statement said. Lasting around 15 to 30 minutes, they are: “Takeaway Nightmare” directed by Devin Ip; “Reincarnated Station” directed by Jacky Lao; “Same as the Light” directed by Achilles Lei; “Rootless Guide” directed by Leong Hoi Hong; and “Only in the Dream” directed by Chiang Kun Ieong, with the teams spending 6 months on filming and post production.

CIPA President Patrick Wong was quoted by the statement as saying: “This initiative represents a vital milestone in our commitment to nurturing talent. Our aim is to ignite the ‘cinematic dreams’ of aspiring individuals, empowering passionate youth in Macau to boldly create, express themselves, and tell the story of Macau through micro films”.

Sands China Executive Vice Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying-wai highlighted in the statement the range of topics, creativity and international vision showcased. He added: “Since the launch of the programme, it has successfully cultivated a new wave of local filmmaking talent, with some of their works earning recognition in micro film competitions in the Chinese mainland, a testament to the programme’s encouraging achievements”.

The statement said that the programme launched in 2022, with over 400 people having participated in its productions, including Lei Kin Fong, who directed “Memento of Parents” that won an award in a micro film competition in the Chinese mainland.
