A local male teenager lost HK$7,000 (7,210 patacas) from a nude chat scam on Sunday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Leong Sok Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Leong, the victim initiated a conversation with a person on social media at around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. The two continued chatting until about 8:00 p.m., while they switched to the messaging app Telegram.
The person claimed to be a woman, Leong said.
Then at around 11:00 p.m., the victim engaged in a nude video chat with the “woman” for about a minute, Leong said. He did not see “her”.
Shortly afterwards, the “woman” sent the victim screenshots taken during the video chat and demanded HK$7,000, threatening to send the video to the victim’s social media contacts if he refused to comply.
Following “her” instructions, the victim purchased prepaid gift cards worth about HK$7,000 and provided the serial numbers and password to “her”.
“She” later instructed the victim to travel to Hong Kong, claiming that this was to delete the video and related data in front of him.
The victim subsequently grew suspicious and, after considering the situation, reported the case to the PJ on Monday, Leong said.
Leong added that the blackmailer used an English female name. However, the victim had never seen “her” face. During their social media exchanges, the person had repeatedly identified herself as female.
