The pedestrianisation of a major part of Taipa Village and the Macau peninsula’s Rua de Nossa Senhora do Amparo (關前後街) will be implemented during the first six days of the upcoming seven-day National Day Golden Week holiday period in the Chinese mainland – which will start on Thursday next week, the local government announced yesterday.
This year, the mainland’s National Day holiday period will run between October 1 and 7.
The festive-period pedestrianisation of Taipa Village was first implemented during the Chinese mainland’s New Year Golden Week holiday period and National Day Golden Week holiday period in 2024. Last year, the measure was extended to the mainland’s Labour Day holiday period.
In addition to Taipa Village, the government’s festive-period pedestrianisation initiative was extended to Rua de Nossa Senhora do Amparo during last year’s National Day holiday period.
Rua de Nossa Senhora do Amparo is a street in a neighbourhood colloquially known in Cantonese as “Laahn Gwai Lau” (爛鬼樓 – “Dilapidated Ghost Building”).
The government decided early this year to formalise the implementation of the festive-period pedestrianisation of the two areas during the mainland’s Chinese New Year holiday period, Labour Day holiday period, and National Day holiday period.
The government announced details of the upcoming pedestrianisation of the two areas in a joint statement released through the Macao Government Information Bureau (GCS) yesterday.
Initiated by the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT), the holiday-period pedestrianisation of the two areas is implemented by the bureau in collaboration with six other public entities – the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Public Security Police Force (PSP), the Fire Services Bureau (CB), the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), and the Transport Bureau (DSAT). Yesterday’s statement was jointly issued by these seven public entities.
While the upcoming National Day holiday period in the Chinese mainland will run between October 1 and 7, the pedestrianisation of the two areas will be implemented between October 1 and 6.
As previously, the temporary car-free zones will be set up between noon and 7 p.m.
